wahine molkai start

Kauai surf and turf…

Regardless of summer long  fitness routines or overall stoke and anticipation,  placid  waters give way almost overnight to the first days of large surf-able waves. Ease of access into Hawaii’s winter surf season almost always hits unannounced. Take for example the beginning of this years  2012  Na Wahine Molokai to Oahu canoe race…routine predawn preparations and tactical equipment checklists are vital to the overall success of such a magnificent endeavor. However, Mother ocean served up a surprise never before seen on race day. Swells from a far away storm arrived full force and sporadically closed out the channel as dozens of canoes from around the world frantically sought  safe passage to the starting line.  Although some very tense moments occurred  and multiple boats were dramatically swamped and  upended, the race began with only one boat and one athlete unable to continue. Proof positive that no matter the level of preparation, one must be ready for the unknown.

As you savor the many beautiful moments along Kauai’s shorelines, a sense of responsibility is key to enjoying all that this island offers while remaining vigilant of hazards.  Our dynamic ocean  captivates and we are replenished as we connect through sport, sustenance gathering and  relaxation.  Flow with the rhythms of the ocean safely…
