Shark on Kauai

Through the course of  gathering intel from guests on what  activities or experiences they would love to do while visiting Kauai, i have to laugh at so many misconceptions!!!

Fear of dying comes in many forms….zipline falling, helicopter height delirium and so on are common topics…my favorite is the ever present concern for SHARKS!! Whether its a close to shore surf lesson, shallow pristine reef snorkel tour, a catamaran dinner cruise down the Na Pali coast, sharks are on every ones minds…kids i can reassure and playfully dialogue about how sharks are just fish and don’t have English accents as in “Nemo” or care to spend time anywhere near people. On occasion, you will see them and when asked …”where are there sharks..?”  i say…taste the water and if you taste salt, they live there!

Adults are a whole ‘nother animal!  All i strive to do is present a true representation of sharks …sure, they have “attacked” humans.  Mostly in areas know to have seal rookeries on the mainland, murcky runoff good smelling water,  when a dead whale carcass is a floating buffet, or on rare occasion mistaking a surfers foot for a turtle…

Sharks don’t think about toying with a person as a killer whale does with a seal pup.  Sharks are fish.  They want to eat.  They won’t stalk you as you wade ankle deep or leap out as you enjoy the sunset on the Hanalei pier…

Most will get it.  Some revert to their fears of the unknown. part of my work is being a happy psychologist in what i know and can share….fingers crossed…
